As we all know I am not a morning person, but I do put an effort into starting my mornings off right.
I had the pleasure of learning (through experiential education of course) that simply putting my shoes on first thing in the morning radically alters my day in productive and feel good ways.
This is one of those examples where I’ve heard this before. Fly lady swore it was true along with dozens of other organized type mom advisors, but I naively scoffed at them all. After all, isn’t that a major perk of staying at home with my kids? I relish that fact that I don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn and get dressed. I love pajama days.
This one morning I came downstairs and Stone was already in the kitchen with the boys. I heard them clomping around in shoes and was forewarned that a glass had broken and I should go put some shoes on. I put on socks, laced up my sneakers and went on to have a million dollar day.
I felt like I was about to teach a yoga class or go take a run or….I’m not really sure, but it added a bit of spunk to my usual breakfast and clean-up routine. I felt like supermom and every time I have one of those moments I try to stretch those feelings as far as possible.
So I’ll admit it, Fly Lady was right: lacing up your shoes first thing in the morning does kick start your day into fabulousness. But of course, like most things in life, I needed to learn this lesson myself.
(This makes me wonder what other Super Mom tricks are out there that I’ve been missing.)

My problem with shoes is that we don’t wear them in the house. For me, it’s brushing my teeth and washing my face. Simple but effective.
We also don’t wear shoes in the house. I tried that a few years back, hoping I’d be more motivated to workout and such, but it didn’t really work for me. And the kids? They couldn’t even keep their slippers or socks on long enough in the house.
I just change from my pj’s first thing, and get ready, as if I’m going somewhere. My kids do this too, and that helps me be more accountable as they would always say something if I (or another family member) stayed in pj’s a bit longer!

Glad you had a productive day! I love days like that. I can’t do the shoes…but I do like to put on make-up and a pair of jeans.
I’ve heard this advice, but I don’t wear shoes in the house, and I don’t want to start. I wonder if there’s some non-shoe-in-house stand-in that I could use. Like sporty slippers?

I’m finding all the responses funny, b/c we usually don’t wear shoes in the house either. I only did it because of the broken glass and then, yes, Amber, I found an older pair of wool clogs that I don’t wear out anymore and use them as my “shoes”.
I’m getting my lazy butt out of bed now…and going to grab my sneakers….will report back:)
I’m with you Hillary-always have my shoes on!

Wow–you have a wonderful space here. I just read your bio and I think I might want to be your best friend. Do you have one? ;)
I am actually the exact opposite. I feel completely uncomfortable with my shoes on and can only think of when I will taken them off when they are on! My Zillion Dollar Days are when I wear slippers most of the day…
Now I’m wondering if I should try this… hmmm. I also know that the earlier in the day I shower, the more motivated and gung-ho I feel, but that doesn’t stop me from waiting until after lunch to get in there. :P

I tried your shoe thingie and was pleasantly surprised that it led me outdoors, to sit in my ‘happy place’ in the sun! There is something about getting ready to ‘go’ that helps us get moving and get going. Thanks for sharing :)
