Safe Household Cleaners

There are only two household cleaners I use and they are both affordable and safe for my family, my community and the environment.

I use baking soda and white vinegar. That’s all.

We have a squirt bottle filled with 1 part vinegar and 5 parts water. We use this for spraying down sinks, counters, bamboo floors, tile floors, in and around the toilet and for cleaning windows. (You can make the mixture stronger for windows. It cuts grease and does not streak!) It cleans and disinfects and you can add different essential oils for smells and to help with the cleaning action. For example, lemon or orange eo would be a great addition to your mixture.

I use baking soda for sinks, my clawfoot tub, the oven and any pan that has schmuck on it. Baking soda is amazing. You know that grime in the tub and shower? I barely have to use muscle; the baking soda just cuts through the grime and then I rinse. No harsh chemicals to worry about. You know that grease that builds up in your oven? A little elbow grease and some baking soda does the job without scratching. It really is amazing. And cheap. And safe.

We have small pipes because we live in an old house and they tend to get build up. Once a month or so I pour baking soda down the drain and then pour vinegar. The chemical reaction breaks through the build up and helps deal with stinky pipes.

It has made cleaning our home an enjoyable, safe and green activity.
