Since I got my diy insecurities off my chest I’m ready to share what we’ve been working on. We’ve been homeowners for 3 short years, but in that time we’ve learned that those great big to-do lists take much longer than originally thought.
With this in mind (and with the reality based attitude that a baby is coming smack in the middle of summer) we asked ourselves: if we could realistically accomplish one outdoor project before the baby came what would it be?
The unanimous answer was to deal with this:
And maybe, more importantly this:
Yes–that is our entire backyard (downtown living at its best!) and yes, that is our disaster of a compost bin begging us to deal.
We have this eco-disease where we can’t bear to throw away food in the trash. I don’t know, putting something that is so obviously biodegradable into a plastic bag and using fossil fuels to transport it to a dump somewhere somehow seems like porn (and to clarify I’m referencing the disrespectful, super bad kind of porn). So when our bin filled up sometime late last summer and nowhere to go with any of it Stone began digging holes in our 20×18 ft back yard and simply burying it. I told him it was crazy–maybe something we could do if we lived on a farm, but how long could this go on for? He replied that he thought he had the best composting system in town. Hmmmm……
Then came spring and not only was our bin filled to the tip top, but anywhere you dug a shovel you came up with all sorts of lovely kitchen waste. To be fair, we also started to have the darkest, worm filled soil on the block and since we are very crowded and built on fill this is a rare commodity around town.
Then we came up with a brilliant idea. A fantastically, brilliant idea. What was it?
Stay tuned and you will surely find out.

Now–I’m thinking the tease might not have been such a good idea. What seems monumental to us might not be so impressive in the end! lol!
I’m already impressed! I was just reading that burying kitchen waste is THE BEST way to make compost, if you’re patient! What are ya going to do? Plant a whole bunch of stuff in your yard?? I’m on the edge of my seat!!! ;)

“We have this eco-disease where we can’t bear to throw away food in the trash.”
this line made me laugh out loud. we have the same issue. seriously. it *pains* me to throw food waste into the trash — so much so that i have been known to carry bags of scraps home from other people’s houses to feed to our chickens. (seriously. i have issues.)
looking forward to seeing what you guys are working on…
